    To avoid unforeseen events when boarding:

    • On national trips, try to arrive one hour early, not less.
    • On international trips, arrive at the airport two hours early (up to three during high season and holidays).
    • Do not forget that confirmation of the reservation is mandatory 72 hours before the flight departure time, a measure that is even more indispensable if you are returning from abroad.

  • Customs

    According to the Brazilian legislation, all travelers entering or leaving Brazil with cash in national or foreign currency exceeding an amount of R$10,000.00 is required to present the Electronic Currency Carry-On Statement (e-DPV).

    During your return to Brazil, you can bring goods without payment of taxes provided they are included in the concept of baggage; do not allow the presumption of import for commercial or industrial purposes and simultaneously respect the global value limit and quantitative limit.

    The total value limit corresponds to:
    • US$ 500.00 (five hundred US dollars) or its equivalent in another currency, when the traveler enters the Country by air or by sea
    • US$ 300.00 (three hundred US dollars) or its equivalent in another currency, when the traveler enters the Country by land, river or lack

    The quantitative limit corresponds to:

    • By air or by sea

    a- alcoholic drinks: total of 12 liters;
    b- cigarettes: total of 10 packets, each containing 20 units;
    c- cigars or cigarillos: total of 25 units;
    d- tobacco: total of 250 grams;
    e- goods not listed in items “a” to “d” (souvenirs and small presents) of unit value less than US$ 10.00: total of 20 units, provided there are not more than 10 identical units; and
    f- goods not listed in items “a” to “e”: total of 20 units, provided there are not more than 3 identical units.

    • By land

    a- alcoholic drinks: total of 12 liters;
    b- cigarettes: total of 10 packets, each containing 20 units;
    c- cigars or cigarillos: total of 25 units;
    d- tobacco: total of 250 grams;
    e- goods not listed in items “a” to “d” (souvenirs and small presents) of unit value less than US$ 5.00: total of 20 units, provided there are not more than 10 identical units; and
    f- goods not listed in items “a” to “e”: total of 10 units, provided there are not more than 3 identical units.
    Besides the exemptions to which all travelers have the right in general, you may have the right to exemptions granted to travelers in special situations. Check if this applies to you.
    The exemption applicable to goods part of the exemption quota is only granted once a month even if the total value limit has been partially used.

    These limits and conditions also apply to goods brought in by travelers not residing in Brazil, even as gifts.

    Goods to declare

    All travelers entering Brazil, including crewmembers, of any means of transportation and with goods to declare is required to go to the GOODS TO DECLARE sector and present the Statement of Accompanied Baggage (DBA) to customs authority.

    The goods brought in from abroad as accompanied baggage and that exceed the exemption quota should be listed in the DBA and the Special Taxation Regime for Baggage should be applied to these, which subjects the traveler to pay import tax calculated at the rate of 50% of the excess amount of the exemption quota.
    The traveler should present the invoice or purchase receipt containing the purchase value of the goods abroad. In the absence of this document or in case of its inaccuracy, the value of the goods is determined by the customs authority.

    The traveler is required to fill out the Statement of Accompanied Baggage (DBA) and go to the “GOODS TO DECLARE” sector when bringing:

    I - animals, plants or their parts, seeds, products of animal or plant origin, veterinary products or pesticides
    II – medical products, products for in vitro diagnosis, cleaning products or biological materials
    III - medications, except for personal use, or foods of any kind
    IV – weapons or ammunitions
    V – goods subject to restrictions or prohibitions or to common import regime
    V – goods intended for commercial or industrial purposes or other goods that cannot be classified as baggage;
    VI – goods that should be subjected to storage for later shipping under the common import regime
    VII – goods subject to special temporary admission customs regime when it is compulsory to list it in the DBA
    VIII – goods whose total value exceeds the exemption limit for the means of transportation
    IX – goods that exceed the quantitative limit for exemption
    X – cash amounts exceeding R$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand reais) or its equivalent in another currency

    In other cases, the traveler does not have to fill out the DBA and can go to the “NOTHING TO DECLARE” sector.

    What is not allowed to bring from abroad

    • Cigarettes and drinks made in Brazil, intended exclusively for sale abroad;
    • Cigarettes of brands that are not sold in the country of origin;
    • Toys, replicas and imitations of firearms that may be confused with real ones, unless it is to be part of the collection of an authorized user, according to the conditions established by the Brazilian Army Command;
    • Animal species from wildlife without a technical opinion and license issued by the Ministry of Environment;
    • Aquatic species for ornamental purposes and agricultural, at any stage of the life cycle, without permission from the competent body;
    • Products with false, changed or limited brands or that have false indication of origin;
    • Goods whose production has violated the copyright ("pirated");
    • Products containing genetically modified organisms;
    • Pesticides, their components and similar products;
    • Goods offensive to moral, good customs, health or public order;
    • Narcotic substances or drugs.
    What cannot be brought from abroad as baggage
    • Objects intended for resale or industrial use;
    • Automobiles, motorcycles, scooters, motorized bicycles, trailers and other land motor vehicles, their parts and pieces;
    • Aircrafts and their parts and pieces;
    • Ships of all kinds, jet skis and similar items and ship engines and their parts and pieces.
    What is allowed and exempted from taxes
    Exempted from taxes are the following goods that are part of the carry-on baggage and shipped baggage, accompanied by traveler from abroad:
    • Clothes and other objects of personal use or consumption
    • Books, flyers and journals
    • Other goods, simultaneously observing the total value limit (exemption quota) and quantitative limit

    Unaccompanied baggage

    Unaccompanied baggage is a set of goods that arrive from abroad or is sent abroad with a bill of lading or equivalent document.

    It is subjected to the same limitations of the accompanied baggage. The unaccompanied baggage should come from the country or countries of origin of the traveler and arrive in Brazil within a period of three months prior or six months after arrival of the traveler.

    Outside this period the goods are subjected to the common import regime for baggage. The arrival date of the traveler in Brazil is confirmed by presentation of the passenger ticket, statement of the carrier or passport.

    The customs clearance of unaccompanied baggage can only be processed after the arrival of the traveler and must begin within a period of 90 days as from the unloading of the goods, under the penalty of being considered abandoned.

    When unaccompanied baggage is strayed, the traveler should request the carrier to register the occurrence upon arrival and contact customs authority to inform them of this registration in order to ensure the right to later use the exemption quota.

    Duty Free Shop

    The traveler can purchase with tax exemption at the duty free shops of ports or airports upon arrival in Brazil and before the presentation of goods with total value of up to U$ 500.00 to customs authority. This value is not debited from the baggage quota to which the traveler is entitled.

    Besides the total limit of U$ 500.00, the goods purchased at the duty free shops are subject to the following quantitative limits:

    • 24 units of alcoholic drinks, with a maximum of 12 units per type of drink
    • 20 packets of foreign-made cigarettes
    • 25 units of cigars or cigarillos
    • 250g of tobacco prepared for pipe
    • 10 units of make-up items
    • 3 units of watches, machines, devices, equipment, toys, games or electric or electronic instruments

    Minors below the age of 18 years cannot purchase alcoholic drinks or tobacco items even if accompanied.
    Goods purchased at duty free shops in Brazil during departure of the traveler abroad, at the duty free shops abroad and purchased in duty free shops, catalogs and displays inside the bus, aircraft or ships are subjected to the same treatment as other goods purchased abroad, becoming part of the baggage of the traveler.

  • Baggage

    Carry-on baggage

    The carry-on or cabin baggage is considered an unregistered baggage under the sole responsibility of the passenger carrying it, and the sum of the dimensions (height, width and length) cannot exceed 115cm, including wheels, handles, external pockets, etc.

    The maximum measurements of each dimension are 23 x 40 x 55 cm. Its weight must not exceed 10 kg.

    Medications, jewelry, money, important documents, negotiable papers, keys, mobile phones (switched off), accessories or other fragile objects and of value should be placed in the carry-on baggage, always observing the weight and size allowed.

    Except for children up to two years old paying 10% of the fare, any passenger can carry as carry-on baggage:

    • One handbag, suitcase or equipment that can be placed under the passenger seat or in a compartment of the aircraft
    • One overcoat, sheet or blanket
    • One umbrella or walking stick
    • One small camera, one laptop and/or one binoculars
    • Reading material for the trip in reasonable quantity
    • Children aged up to two years paying 10% of the fair:
    • Infant food for consumption during the trip
    • One basket or equivalent (can be carried in the aircraft hold)
    • Disabled passengers can carry as carry-on baggage articles they depend on, such as crutches or orthopedic devices, foldable wheelchairs (this item is part of the carry-on baggage allowance but can be placed in the aircraft hold).

    These rules apply to domestic flights in aircrafts with more than 50 seats. In smaller aircrafts, each airline company has specific rules regarding the dimensions and weights allowed for carry-on baggage.

    What is not allowed in the carry-on baggage

    In international flights or domestic routes of international flights, the following objects are not allowed as carry-on baggage:

    • Sharp objects like: knife, pocket knife, stiletto, cuticle nippers, etc.
    • Matches and gas torch lighter (cannot be carried inside carry-on baggage and/or shipped baggage)
    • In case of substances (liquid, gel, cream), the determination of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) for transportation in carry-on baggage should occur as follows:
    • The liquid should be in a bottle with maximum capacity of 100 ml. Bottles exceeding 100 ml cannot be transported even if they have the stipulated quantity.
    • The passenger should properly pack the bottle (with clearance) inside a sealed transparent plastic package with maximum capacity of 1 liter and maximum size of 20 cm x 20 cm.
    • Drinks for immediate consumption (juices, sodas, etc) purchased at the departure area after passing through the airport inspection should be taken before boarding the aircraft.
    • In the case of perfumes and drinks purchased at the duty free shops, a professional from the shop must take the goods to the aircraft to be handed to the passenger

    All prohibited items are retained by the airport security agents.

    The passenger with connection flight from any airport in the United Kingdom should not purchase any type of liquid and/or perfume at the Duty Free shop considering that these will be confiscated during your transit in London during the security check.

    What is allowed in the carry-on baggage

    • Feeding bottles and processed infant food (when babies and children are travelling)
    • Essential medications with medical prescriptions (should contain the name of the passenger to be compared with what is contained in the boarding pass)
    • Essential medications that do not require medical prescription (eye drop, saline solution for contact lenses, etc, provided they do not exceed 120ml or 4oz)
    • Insulin and liquids (including special juices or gel) for diabetic passengers with medical prescriptions, provided they do not exceed 148 ml (or 5 oz)
    • Solid cosmetics (lipsticks, lip balm or stick deodorant , etc)
    • Electronic devices (laptop, photographic camera, portable game, mobile phone, etc)
    • Shipped baggage and allowances


    Checked baggage and allowance

    On domestic flights:

    • In domestic flights, for baggage shipped in the aircraft hold, each company has its own fares, that should be checked before purchasing the ticket, so it does not implies on unexpected costs. 
    • Special baggage, independent of being included in the passenger’s allowance or not, are subjected to extra transport fee of R$ 100.00 at the check-in counter of the airport.
    • Items considered special baggage: fishing pole, surfing board, bicycle, ski/snowboard, bow and arrow, kite surf, scooter.
    • Items not considered special baggage, included in the baggage allowance: Golf bag, skate, bodyboard, balls (empty), roller skate.
    • Items that should be shipped as separate cargo: kayak, windsurf.
    • Children younger than two years old travel free of charge and are not entitled to baggage provided they travel on the lap of a person over 12 years old. Children aged between 2 and 12 years are entitled to two bags with total baggage weight of 11.5 kg.

    On international flights

    • In flights going to Europe, North America, South Africa and Asia, the adult or child with reserved seat is entitled to two bags of 32 kg and dimension (length + width + height) of 158 cm each, for all service classes. The maximum weight of shipped baggage with connections and/or Europe as final destination will be 32 kg per volume.
    • Extra volume is allowed by paying the excess baggage fee (1% of the value of non-promotional ticket per kilogram) but the weight rule must also be respected.
    • Any volume that exceeds 32 kg should be shipped as cargo.
    • Infants younger than two years old can take one foldable stroller, one basket or car seat and one piece of baggage respecting the dimensions for baggage acceptance, which can be shipped or carried with you.
    • Animals are always paid for as excess baggage, even when the limit allowed by the airline company is not exceeded.
      Strayed baggage
    • When baggage is shipped, the airline company gives the passenger the shipped baggage receipt indicating the departure and destination points as well as the baggage tag number, quantity and weight.
    • In the case of strayed or damaged baggage, immediately complain to the representative of the airline company or authority present at the baggage claim location. The airline companies do not accept late complaints.
    • To facilitate the identification and location in case of stray, the passenger should place a tag on the outer part of the baggage with the passenger's name, full address and telephone.


    Baggage loss

    On domestic flights

    • The baggage will be considered strayed in case it is not delivered at its destination point. When this occurs, contact the representative of the airline while still inside the arrival sector. The Aviation inspector of ANAC, located at the Civil Aviation Sector (SAC) in major Brazilian airports, should be contacted in case of problems.
    • After confirming the stray, the airline company has a maximum period of 30 days to locate and deliver the baggage. After this period the passenger should be compensated by the company.
    • As a prevention measure, the passenger can declare the values attributed to the baggage by paying an additional fee stipulated by the company. In this case the airline company has the right to check the contents of the baggage and the compensation value is declared and accepted by the company.

    On international flights

    • The Warsaw Convention limits the responsibility of the airline ticket to U$ 20 per kilogram of strayed baggage.
    • The maximum compensation value for international flights is US$ 400.
    • The passenger can also choose to ship his belongings by protecting himself through a special statement of interest. This document meticulously lists the content of the bag. Only with this statement can full compensation be obtained, with prevalence of the responsibility of the airline company over the goods contained in it.

  • Traveler's Rights

    Flight delay or interruption

    Delays of four hours or more in flights should allow the endorsement of the value of the ticket and all expenses resulting from the delay or interruption of flights by the company.
    Overbooking. This occurs when the number of tickets sold exceeds the quantity of seats available on the airplane and the passenger has to wait for the next flight as a result of this.

    In these cases, the airline company is required to provide the customer with a number of benefits. The choice can be an amount of money or services of the company, such as additional ticket, upgrade to first class and payment of excess baggage. All expenses made due to the unforeseen event should be paid by the airline company.

    The companies, in turn, have the right to repurchase seats on the flights (to accommodate passengers that need to board immediately), compensating whoever accepts to leave the airplane.

    Special passenger service

    The disabled can inform beforehand what their needs are and will mandatorily have the assistance of the airline companies, airports and companies that provide auxiliary services.
    The boarding of these people is performed 20 minutes before others, their baggage is considered a priority and if the need for an assistant is confirmed due to physical disability, the company will pay 20% of the value of the ticket.

    The boarding of guide-dogs to help the disabled in flights is allowed provided they present the health certificate of the animal.

    Pregnant Women

    Pregnant women up to four weeks before the expected delivery date or with established delivery complications should present the medical certificate during reservation.
    Pregnant women with expected delivery date within the next 7 days or who delivered within 7 days from the traveling date will not be authorized to board.

    Passengers with health problems

    People with contagious diseases or health problems that can deteriorate during the flight need to pass through the medical sector of the company, which will determine the feasibility of the trip.

    The company should be informed beforehand about passengers that will travel on stretchers or that require special attention during the flight, and they can only board accompanied by a doctor or nurse.

    Complaints, suggestions and claims

    Instructions of the National Civil Aviation Agency site: in case you feel wronged or have your rights disrespected, first contact the contracted airline company to claim your rights as a consumer.

    It is also possible to register a complaint against the airline company at ANAC, which will analyze the fact and apply a fine to the company if the noncompliance of the civil aviation rules is confirmed.

    To claim compensations for moral and/or material damages, consult the consumer defense agencies or go to the Judiciary.

    To demand these compensations, it is important to keep the boarding pass and receipts of expenses made (food, transport, lodging and communication) or documents related to the professional activity to have been executed at the destination.

  • Animal Transportion

    Taking animals on trips requires the compliance with the official rules as well as those imposed by companies that will execute the transport. Therefore, if the intention is to have your pet as a travel companion, plan ahead, know the rules and provide what is necessary for a smooth journey for you, the animal and whoever is close by.

    Basically, to transport animals in national territory requires having the Animal Transit Guide (GTA) issued by a veterinary qualified by the Ministry of Agriculture or health defense agency of the states. As an exception, dogs and cats may transit in the country on airline or road trips without GTA, with the mandatory health certificate issued by the veterinary doctor registered at CRMV [Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine]. In the case of wild species, the authorization from the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Resources (Ibama) is required.

    The International Zoosanitary Certificate (CZI) is mandatory for trips abroad (and when returning, issued at the country of origin).

    In Brazil, the CZI can only be issued by an inspector of the International Agricultural Surveillance (Vigiagro) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), according to the official models approved and agreed upon with the veterinary authorities of the countries of destination of the animals.

    The CZI can be obtained at the MAPA office installed at the airport of flight origin of the animal in the case of air transport; at the border in the case of international land transport, and a the sea or river port in the case of international sea or river transport.

    Airplane: For air transport, the animals should travel inside containers according to their size. Females in gestation period are not accepted. The reservation should be made within a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Small dogs and cats are allowed in the passenger cabin as long as they comply with specific parameters and requirements of each airline company and do not cause discomfort to other passengers.

    Bigger animals normally travel in the baggage compartment, with the exception of guide dogs that accompany the visually impaired.

    In international travels, the airline companies apply the International Air Transport Association rules that regulate the transport of animals.

    Trains: Some countries allow the transport of animals on trains under the conditions dictated by official laws and company rules. In general, this means taking animals in special containers or with a leash and muzzle and having the health certificate. Most times small animals can be transported without cost while bigger ones may cost half the value of the fare. Guide dogs travel free of charge.

    Bus: In general, only small animals are allowed in buses, inside containers appropriate for their size and with vaccination up to date. The rules vary according to the company and legislation of the country.

    Cruises: With the exception of guide dogs of the disabled, animals are not allowed on cruises except with the special grant from the organizing company.
